So, today, you are going to see if you can spot one of these particular species of flies and spend some time actually looking at them.

Today’s Weird Holiday… It’s Lame Duck Day

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

“Hey, today is everything it’s quacked up to be. Lame Duck Day is set aside to give recognition to people whose tenure in a position is running out.

Okay, so you are probably thinking that a “lame duck” is a duck with some sort of injury. If only that were the reason for toady! Rather, a “Lame Duck” by human, definition is a person who is in a position of some kind, and will soon be “shown the door”. The best example is an incumbent politician who lost in the November elections. They usually remain in office until the beginning of January. It also applies to leaders, managers, etc, who are retiring or whose term of office is up. ”

Don’t ask me how or why, but I didn’t have a clue what a “lame duck” was. I even asked my daughter and she didn’t know either. For some reason I thought that it had to do with someone being useless, but obviously that’s not it at all!

Have you ever heard of the term and does it hold any other meaning for you??

Today’s Weird Holiday - It’s Backward Day

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

TiramisuThat’s right, today you do everything backwards… which reminds me of my dad. He used to hate the fact that he would never have room left for dessert, so one day, he decided that he would eat dessert first and then finish with whatever mom had made for dinner.

Guess he decided that every day would be his “backward” day… at least when it came to dinner. And it worked for him!

Today’s Weird Holiday… It’s National Corn Chip Day

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Shawnee Corn Queen Chip & Dip/Vegetable Set 2 Piece (DP/FR)

When I was a kid, my parents owned a little convenience store at a lake and each day my sisters and I were given 25 cents to spend on whatever we wanted in the store. I remember what I bought vividly… a bottle of Coke and a bag of corn chips. That was definitely a summer to remember! And both for just 25 cents!! Can you imagine what that would cost now?? Anyway, here’s a little trivia and recipes for you.

Did You Know? Fritos Corn Chips were first marketed in 1961.

And just in case you would like to try your hand at making your own, I have found you a recipe.

And according to my family, you have to have salsa with corn chips, so I found an easy one that has only four ingredients. If you are looking for easy… click here! Personally, just give me a Coke with my corn chips and I’m happy!

Today’s Weird Holiday

Friday, January 19th, 2007

I don’t think you are going to like this one much, but it is a necessary evil and one that you might even be able to work into a story at some point in the future. Get ready… it’s Clean Out Your Kitchen Cupboards Day. Okay, I’m going to make it easy on you. Just pick one cupboard and pull everything out of it. And, that goes for the tall ones that you have to stand on a chair to reach.

I did this just a few minutes ago and found a particular cup that never gets used. That reminded me of my sister’s Mad Cup. Whenever she was ticked off at her husband, she would place that particular cup in front of his dinner plate and he instantly knew that he was in trouble.

So there you go… clean out your cupboard and see what is lurking up there! It might just be the basis of a novel. Who knows??

Today’s Weird Holiday - It’s Boxing Day - December 26th

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

A Christmas To Remember: A Cape Light NovelAt home, that means it’s the day to hit the mall for all the specials. You have been cooped up one whole day, so it’s time to go and buy everything that you didn’t get for Christmas! And usually, the prices are absolutely amazing!

“The roots of the holiday goes back to the Middle Ages . On this day, members of the merchant class would take boxes, fill them with food and fruits, and give them to servants, tradespeople and the less fortunate. In the case of servants, they would work on Christmas Day, so it was only fitting that immediately after Christmas, they would be given a day off to celebrate. Usually celebrated the day after Christmas, some would celebrate the following Monday when Christmas fell on a Friday or Saturday.”

Today’s Weird Holiday - It’s National Eggnog Day - December 24th

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

Nutmeg MillIs there anyone alive who doesn’t love eggnog?? I simply love the stuff but I’m still looking for the sugar free variety. Do you have any idea how much sugar they add to make it taste good?? I wonder who first came up with the drink??

And that gadget up there… it’s a nutmeg grinder. Do you have any idea how much work is involved in grating a nutmeg. And it’s murder on your fingers, but is sure tastes good on a mug of eggnog! Hope you are having a great Christmas Eve by the way… :)

Herbatint Herbal Hair Color Gel To Cover Gray Hair No Ammonia ItalianThe first thing that I thought of was the fact that maybe my roots need retouching?? Where I live, it certainly can’t have anything to do with growing things… I wish!!

On a different note, we left early this morning for our Christmas holiday in Port Charlotte, Florida. I can’t wait to see my first palm tree. I plan on logging in here on a daily basis, so don’t be a stranger!

Today’s Weird Holiday… Cover Anything in Chocolate

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Bosco Chocolate Syrup, The Original, 25 ozWell, that obviously works for me. Okay, so I’m sure that it could get out of hand. I was just watching this video last night where this toddler decided that she liked things covered in chocolate and then proceeded to drizzle her entire bedroom in chocolate syrup.

Luckily, her parents found it extremely funny… at least on their video. Now, I’m not sure how they would feel once they began to clean up the room. The little girl must gave gone through an entire bottle of the stuff!

Stuff for you writers out there… (more…)
