Bannock for Indian Summer Day

Bannock for Indian Summer Day

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons baking powder
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 1/2 cups water
Place all dry ingredients into a bowl and mix well. There is nothing worse than biting into a wedge of bannock and finding a lump of baking powder.
Add melted butter and water. I find that a large metal bowl seems to work the best. It takes less water for some reason.
Remove dough from bowl and knead until dough resembles bread dough. Pat into a …read more

It’s National Vanilla Ice Cream Day

It’s National Vanilla Ice Cream Day

Before you turn up your nose at vanilla ice cream as being bland, just think how versatile it is. A few scoops in a serving dish and you have dessert. And if you have a little chocolate syrup, even better! It’s right up there with your other staples! It goes with everything!!
I made chocolate cake last week and can you think of any other flavor of ice cream what would compliment chocolate cake in quite the same way? I don’t think so. And did you know that it rates only second to chocolate!
And there is just something about ice …read more

Foods That Seduce

Foods That Seduce

We have all heard of Aphrodisiacs, but do you have any idea how many there are and how they came to be included?? I just perused the list and some surprised me… especially the fact that licorice was included. Never heard that one before. So, you just might want to stock up??
Another source has to say this…
Aphrodisiacs, for the most part, have been proved to be ineffective. Named for Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of sex and beauty, these include an array of herbs, foods and other “agents” that are said to awaken and heighten sexual desire. But the 5,000-year tradition …read more

What Is Sour Dough and Why Do We Care?

What Is Sour Dough and Why Do We Care?

No, I’m not in the mood to cook. I made bread once this week (okay thanks to the breadmaker) and then I made baking soda biscuits last night. Damn this World Cup thing. It is taking over our life!! And then darling son calls last night. He’s taking the day off from styling hair to watch the game with his dad! Anyway, back to bread. Here’s what I dug up.
“The history of “sourdough” is as old as the history of leavened bread itself. Way back in ancient days (around 6,000 years ago, some say) humans first figured out how to …read more

Why I Care

Why I Care

“You’ve been hearing the message for years: To stay healthy throughout your life and reduce your risk of a variety of diseases, you need to eat a low fat diet.
So when a major women’s study revealed in February that cutting fat didn’t reduce the risk of heart disease, breast cancer or colorectal cancer, the news made a giant thud.
“What now?” you were probably thinking. “Were all those lunches of grilled chicken salad—’hold the dressing’—for naught?”
Since they are now saying that we could easily live beyond our hundredth birthday, I want to make sure that I am still able to take …read more

The Muffuletta

The Muffuletta

To be quite honest, I had never heard of this sandwich but as it is just before lunchtime that I type this entry, I’m feeling a little “peckish”. I’m not saying that I could eat the entire thing, but I would certainly give it a good shot.

Actually, it might even get me out of cooking dinner if it’s as big as I think it is. A big bag of potato chips and maybe some potato salad to go along with each quarter and we are pretty much done.
“It is an Italian sandwich that consists of a round loaf of …read more
