My Kitchen…

My Kitchen…

My kitchen is a mystical place, a kind of temple for me. It is a place where the surfaces seem to have significance, where the sounds and odors carry meaning that transfers from the past to the future.

And maybe that is why this morning I curled up in a comfy chair and just read nearly half a book. And drank way too much coffee.

Today’s Weird Holiday – National Banana Day

Today’s Weird Holiday – National Banana Day

Today’s project is to see how many times you can work bananas into today’s menu. Off hand, I can think of smoothies, banana bread, banana hot chocolate, but I’m having a hard time coming up with something for a main course. Any ideas out there??

Today’s Weird Holiday – It’s Backward Day

Today’s Weird Holiday – It’s Backward Day

That’s right, today you do everything backwards… which reminds me of my dad. He used to hate the fact that he would never have room left for dessert, so one day, he decided that he would eat dessert first and then finish with whatever mom had made for dinner.
Guess he decided that every day would be his “backward” day… at least when it came to dinner. And it worked for him!

Today’s Superstition

Today’s Superstition

Are you just a little bit curious to see who has a thing for you?? I don’t know who came up with this, but it’s fun just to try it and see what happens. And with Valentine’s Day coming up…
You will need two apple seeds. Give each seed the name of someone that you think might be interested in you and then put them in a frying pan. The first one to pop is the one who is “carrying a torch” for you.
Don’t shake your head lol… these superstitions usually started somewhere and the fact that I heard about …read more

Deep Fried Twinkies

Deep Fried Twinkies

“Twinkies might seem like enough of a treat, but this recipe calls for deep frying the cream-filled snack with batter and eating it like a popsicle. To sweeten the deal, there’s a recipe for berry sauce, too.”
Hey, it’s January, it’s freezing and spring feels like a long way away. So, today I think we should do something pecular like deep frying our Twinkies. That’s what they look like, and you have to admit… they do look good!
Has anyone tried them?

Those Crab Appetizers that Don Makes

Those Crab Appetizers that Don Makes

No, I don’t know Don, but I often visit his wife Cassie and she was raving about these appetizers that Don whiped up for Thanksgiving and just how good they are.
Well, I don’t even like seafood and they are beginning to sound good even to me. So, if you are thinking about what to serve at any of your get-togethers in the coming month, check out Cassie’s husband’s appetizers and then let me know how they turn out. If enough people rave about them, I just might have to let go of this thing I have with seafood and give …read more

Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie

I wonder just how many people serve Sweet Potato Pie for Thanksgiving? I’m only wondering because up here, it is traditional to serve Pumpkin Pie. Only problem is… I’m the only one who likes pumpkin pie so we rarely serve it. I don’t like to think about my waistline about a week later because I would probably end up eating the entire pie.
Now to remedy that, the obvious answer would be to invite a zillion people to dinner. Yeah, I know that our thanksgiving is over, but hey… I can celebrate American holidays too.
Here are the ingredients, …read more

It’s Indian Summer Day… because I said so!

It’s Indian Summer Day… because I said so!

Unless your family is huge, holidays can be few and far between. That’s why I particularly like these weird holidays that I try to track down for you every day. But if for some reason, the day’s holiday doesn’t work for you, simply go out and make up one of your own. For example, as I look out the window, the view almost takes your breath away. The colors aren’t this intense quite yet, but the trees are beginning to turn so we could celebrate “Indian Summer Day”. And for dinner I could look up some native recipes to serve. …read more
