It’s National Sugar Cookie Day – July 9

Just in case you didn’t know… yes, it’s National Sugar Cookie Day and that means you need to get baking. I don’t think that a cookbook exists that doesn’t offer at least one recipe for sugar cookies, but if you are stuck, I looked one up for you. Here it is!
And if you have little kids in your house, you are going to want to sprinkle your cookies generously with colored sugar. Don’t ask me why this makes them 100x better, but according to my kids, it did just that!
*And oh yes, see those cookie cutters… little boys are …read more

The Dragonfly Picture Frame

The Dragonfly Picture Frame

Seeing this frame just reminded me of how many photos are stuck in boxes or photo albums and never enjoyed. I have tons of wall space in the new house. Maybe I should fill them up with photos that we have collected over the years.
And if you have been watching my other blogs, yes, I’m still on the Dragonfly kick. Something or someone is trying to tell me something!!

The Secret To Life

The Secret To Life

I’ve been sitting here with a cup of coffee thinking about life and have come to the conclusion that children know a lot more than we do. It’s Saturday morning and I’m already working and three of them are on the sidewalk below chatting and laughing and drawing with huge pieces of sidewalk chalk.
The secret to life must be the ability to find enjoyment in the simplest of things. Children seem to excell at it! Maybe I need to find my inner child?? I think she must still be in there somewhere!

Living in the Present

Living in the Present

I believe that only one person in a thousand knows the trick of really living in the present.
Storm Jameson
I have to admit that I do think a lot about what it was like when the kids were little and never gave it much thought before I read that quote. I guess it is saying that we miss out on so much of what is going on right now, when we constantly live in the past or worry what is coming in the future??
I’m going to have to work on this. I’m going to try really hard not to let …read more

Coming Home

Coming Home

“If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.”
Nadine Stair
That sounds just like me at ten years old. Unfortunately I was still heading off to school in the spring, so I had to wear shoes… yuck, but the minute summer hit, my life changed. Each day was filled with new sights and sounds, exploring the woods and swimming in Vines’ dugout swimming hole. Life just didn’t get any better …read more

Nothing to do With Money…

Nothing to do With Money…

“So of cheerfulness, or a good temper, the more it is spent, the more it remains.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’m going to be cheerful all day today and see what happens
Yesterday I lost it with another service guy. He was trying to stain the front and garage door in the pouring rain and then wanted me to leave the front door open so that it could dry… in the pouring rain! And then he yells at me for questioning him. He shouldn’t have done that!
Kids can have days where it’s simply fun to be alive. I need …read more

Where We Come From

Where We Come From

Do you think that where we come from has anything to do with where we end up in life? Sometimes I think there’s a link and then there are other times when I don’t see a connection at all.
In the final analysis it is not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings. Ann Landers

Life as a Teen

Life as a Teen

I was just sitting here thinking about the last twenty years of my life. Raising two kids with completely different personalities certainly gave me a few gray hairs over the years. I can stil remember trying to share our experiences, especially with my headstrong son, but did you know that life when we were teens is nothing like what kids had to endure in the nineties?? I’m sure that he thought that both his father and I lived pretty much like the Waltons.
If he only knew. I was growing up during the seventies in the Toronto area, and his …read more

Life as a Worry Wart

Life as a Worry Wart

There are going to be times when circumstances will leave you feeling overwhelmed and scared out of your mind. I don’t think there is a parent alive who hasn’t experienced this kind of stress. Your daughter hasn’t arrived home when you expected and suddenly all sorts of scenarios start racing through your mind. As a self confessed worry wart where my kids are concerned, I often found that if I give myself something else to do, it takes my mind off the situation. Sometimes, just turning on the TV can help. If I can lose myself in someone else’s …read more
