My Kitchen…

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

My kitchen is a mystical place, a kind of temple for me. It is a place where the surfaces seem to have significance, where the sounds and odors carry meaning that transfers from the past to the future.

Pearl Bailey (1918-1990)

And maybe that is why this morning I curled up in a comfy chair and just read nearly half a book. And drank way too much coffee.

Coming of Age...All Over Again: The Ultimate Midlife HandbookDon’t get upset about wrinkles: they’re just foreshadowing!
Cathy Crimmins

Now that’s a nice way to think about wrinkles wouldn’t you say? Do you have a character in your latest piece of work that you could see thinking that way??

Making Writing Fun for Kids

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

Story Wizard - Creative Writing Software for Kids A lot of people might not agree with me, but I think that if you can make writing fun for kids, a lot more of them just might find that they enjoy it. My two think of writing as work! Somewhere along the line, they missed the fun part!

A few years ago, I taught a creative writing course to a gifted class in our local school and the kids had the most fun when I made up little projects for them. One day I filled a paper bag with a lot of bits and pieces and told them to weave a story around the items in the bag. The stories that were turned in were amazing!

That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw this piece of software.

Today’s Quote by Helen Keller

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

No one has a right to consume happiness without producing it.
Helen Keller

I never quite thought of it in that way. I wonder what I can do today that would produce a little happiness for someone else?? Cook something… nah, that would probably just make them feel miserable!

Today’s Weird Holiday… It’s Housefly Day

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

I’m sure that there is a reason for these little guys getting in our faces, but at the moment, they are just an annoyance… so what better the makings of a weird holiday?? So, today, you are going to see if you can spot one of these particular species of flies and spend some time actually looking at them.

And did you know that a housefly actually hums in the key of F! See if you can duplicate that!

Today’s Weird Holiday… It’s Lame Duck Day

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

“Hey, today is everything it’s quacked up to be. Lame Duck Day is set aside to give recognition to people whose tenure in a position is running out.

Okay, so you are probably thinking that a “lame duck” is a duck with some sort of injury. If only that were the reason for toady! Rather, a “Lame Duck” by human, definition is a person who is in a position of some kind, and will soon be “shown the door”. The best example is an incumbent politician who lost in the November elections. They usually remain in office until the beginning of January. It also applies to leaders, managers, etc, who are retiring or whose term of office is up. ”

Don’t ask me how or why, but I didn’t have a clue what a “lame duck” was. I even asked my daughter and she didn’t know either. For some reason I thought that it had to do with someone being useless, but obviously that’s not it at all!

Have you ever heard of the term and does it hold any other meaning for you??

Are you satisfied?

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Hartmann Classic Zip 3-Ring Agenda Agenda - Natural Belting 4700660That is a tricky question. If someone was to ask you right this very minute, what would you be able to truthfully tell them. To be honest, I am a very goal oriented person, so I’m always looking at what I need to accomplish next. Is this normal as it just might mean that I’m never satisfied.

What are your thoughts on the topic??

Coming to you from Foothill Ranch, California

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Just got in late last night, so for the next ten days or so, I plan to soak up the culture. But I have a great restaurant to tell you about… it’s called Islands and although we had to wait for ever to get a table, the wait was worth it. I had a Hawaiian Hamburger and I simply couldn’t finish it. I have never seen a hamburger that big! And you don’t order one serving of french fries, you order them by the bucket to share.

And oh yes… the weather was amazing. We left -10C weather and while I was too tired to inquire what the temperature was last night, we are back to tank tops and flip flops. Doesn’t get much better than that.

I will try to log in later today with an update of what I saw. What it will be at this point I haven’t a clue, but I trust that I will enjoy every minute of it!

Renaissance Banana Tree/Fruit BasketToday’s project is to see how many times you can work bananas into today’s menu. Off hand, I can think of smoothies, banana bread, banana hot chocolate, but I’m having a hard time coming up with something for a main course. Any ideas out there??

Your Schedule

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Manatee Memo HolderSuch a boring topic I know, but I find that if you take a few minutes to review your schedule each day, you get a lot more accomplished by the end of the week. And that means a sense of accomplishment. People are always asking me how I pile so much into my day and it’s all because of how I schedule things.

But, I make sure that I also leave time for play!! No play makes people awfully boring!
