Coming of Age...All Over Again: The Ultimate Midlife HandbookDon’t get upset about wrinkles: they’re just foreshadowing!
Cathy Crimmins

Now that’s a nice way to think about wrinkles wouldn’t you say? Do you have a character in your latest piece of work that you could see thinking that way??

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Just going through a little trivia that I have collected over the years and I have a question for you…

Do you remember what Oscar-winning actress played Janet?

What appealed most to you and what if anything would you change about the character if you could??

Choosing Your Best Pair of Sunglasses - January 11

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Nike Skylon EXP RD Sunglasses - EV0176-002 (Fade Silver w/ Grey Lens with Silver Flash and Orange Lens)“According to the Optical Laboratories Association (an eye-wear industry trade association), people go to the sunglasses counter with two questions in mind: “How will the glasses look?” and “Are they dark enough?” You do need to consider these things, but other concerns come into play as well.

Do sunglasses really protect your eyes?
Yes. Think of them as sunscreen for the eyes. They shield your eyes from wind, dust, and drying, as well as UV (ultraviolet) rays, visible light, and glare. Many experts think that lifetime exposure to UV helps cause cataracts and other eye disorders, though there is some controversy about just how much damage sunlight does, or what percentage of cataracts are caused by it. Blue light, part of the visible spectrum, may damage the retina and impair vision. It makes sense to protect your eyes. Bright sunlight and glare are unpleasant or even painful, and can be hazardous if you are driving or playing a sport. ”

It’s the cataracts that scare me. When I was little and having my eyes checked, I’m sure that I heard the optomotrist state that I will have cataracts when I’m older. I don’t know why he would say that or if I completely dreamed it up, but it has always been in the back of my mind.

And now my mother (for the past few years) has been going through laser surgery to remove them. It seems that they might be running in the family. But, if I can do something to prevent them or slow them down, I’m all for it. That’s why I have been ordering my sunglasses along with my prescription pair that I use for distance.

5 Things to Be Happy About Kind of Day- January 9th

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Well, as you are reading this, I’m in Port Charlotte, Florida and I’m still on vacation. I have about another week so I’m still awfully happy to be soaking up this gorgeous weather. But I have five more things to be especially happy about. Here goes…

1. I have my own pool to play in. I’m thinking strongly about looking for a way to stuff it in the trunk and bringing it home with me.

2. I have gone shopping just about every single day since I have been down here.

3. I love Margarita Tuesdays at Chilis. Going to really miss those!

4. There is nothing like winter in Florida. I could get to like this! ;)

5. The Florida beaches have to have the whitest sand imaginable.

It’s going to be hard to leave all of this behind!

Quotes about Birthdays - January 6th

Miss Patty Cake and the Birthday Party SurpriseInside every older person is a younger person wondering what happened. ~Jennifer Yane

Kind of the same thing when you look at an old photo of yourself. You still remember yourself as being 25 and suddenly a 50 year old is looking back at you. Makes no sense that your mind doesn’t age with your body!

Yoga For Your Back - December 28th

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Thinking out loud here… I’m not sure I like the idea of practicing Yoga for someone with an aching back, but after reading the short article I think that I know where I went wrong.

I did not use a group session like the women in the study. I tried following a video, so chances are, I was not in the proper position and only made my back pain worse. I swore that I would never do Yoga again… but maybe if I found a group to join, maybe I could learn how to strengthen my back?? And if I slid into the wrong position, there would be someone to point it out!

Definitely worth checking out. I can’t even imagine what it would be like not to have an aching back on a (near) daily basis.

Lucy’s Secret - December 27th

Lucille Ball

The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly and lie about your age… Lucille Ball.

The age part… I wonder just how much you could lie and get away with it?? Taking off ten years sounds like a nice round number.

What are Trans Fats and why are they so dangerous?

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

“Trans fats occur naturally in small quantities in meat and dairy products from ruminants. Most trans fats consumed today, however, are industrially created through partial hydrogenation of plant oils and animal fats — a chemical process developed in the early 1900s and first commercialized as Crisco in 1909.

Unlike other fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health.[1] Eating trans fat increases the risk of coronary heart disease.[2] For these reasons, health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be worse than those occurring naturally.[3]”

I’m not a big meat eater (other than those ribs a few nights ago) but I do have to watch the dairy products. I could live on cheese. Not a good idea!

Parties and Drinking…

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Margaritaville Frozen Concoction MakerI just finished writing a post about teens and drinking, so I thought that it was only fair that I do the same for us. We don’t have to worry about the age thing anymore… I wish, but we do have to think about the empty calories and the damage to our waistlines. Here’s what I came up with…

Learn to say no at parties. As long as it isn’t a Margarita, I’m good. If someone is handing out Margaritas, then I’m in trouble, but back to the topic. There is no reason why you can’t enjoy a party with a diet soda in your hand. No one has to know that there is no alcohol in the glass and then there all of those goodies that usually make up the buffet table. What you do is fill your plate with low calorie munchies. I’ve done it a million times. Okay, I usually allow myself one thing that is most likely in the chocolate family. But just one little taste and I’m usually happy!

Families Are Funny That Way

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Inside My Heart: Choosing to Live with Passion and PurposeThe family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.

~Erma Bombeck

And I wouldn’t trade even one of the “little band of characters” that make up my family.
