Gila River Fry Bread

Spirit of the Harvest: North American Indian Cooking

It seems that I’m in the mood to cook today and that doesn’t happen very often. So, I went looking for something a little different and found this Fry Bread.

2 1/4 c Flour 3/4 c Warm water (or a little less
3 T Solid vegetable shortening 1 ts Salt
2 ts Baking powder Fat or oil for frying

It is amazing how you can take a few simple ingredients and find so many different ways to cook it. It seems that every culture had their own method of baking bread. This is a Native American recipe where you fry your biscuits instead of baking them. Not good for the waistline, but I can just bet they taste awfully good!
