Only God Can Make a Tree

Only God Can Make a Tree

Thought of the Day:
“No two trees are alike. And their individuality is no imperfection. On the contrary: The perfection of each created thing is not merely in its conformity to an abstract type but in its own individual identity with itself. This particular tree will give glory to God by spreading out its roots in the earth and raising its branches into the air and the light in a way that no other tree before or after it ever did or will do.”
Thomas Merton
Thinking Outside of the Box:
I have been inside a lot lately. It is …read more

Wesa In Trouble

Wesa In Trouble

Thought of the Day:
“Monsters out dare.
Leakin’ in here.
All sinkin’ and no power?
Whensa yousa tinkin wea in trouble?”
Jar-Jar Binks, “Star Wars: Phantom Menace”
Thinking Outside of the Box:
Whenever I say, “Don’t worry, it could be a lot worse,” my daughter cringes. She has finally forbidden me to use that phrase. She says I don’t understand the true nature of trouble because when I say that, it does get worse.
So… I’m watching “Star Wars: Phantom Menace,” and this alien named Jar-Jar thinks that the Jedi Knights are a little of out of touch for not recognizing trouble. His comment is above. I must …read more

In Honor of Strawberry Ice Cream

In Honor of Strawberry Ice Cream

Thought of the Day:
“It’s a rare plant,” he said, touching the sprig in my open hand. “Flowers, fruit and leaves all together at the one time. The white flowers are for honour, and red fruit for courage – and the green leaves are for constancy.”
Diana Gabaldon, “Drums of Autumn”
Thinking Outside of the Box:
Today is Strawberry Ice Cream Day and I can hardly think of a better reason to celebrate. Now, it is true that my favorite flavor is Haagan Daz Coffee; that is an ice cream I will go out of my way to find. A …read more

Most Romantic Cities in the United States – January 13th

Now this is fun site to peruse. You simply choose the state where you might be vacationing and it will then provide you with a list of romantic spots to check out. I of course clicked on Florida and I like what I see.
Seems as if G and I are definitely going to have to check out more of this state. This particular spot is going on my list…
Lake Helen, Florida
19th century resort town built around a pristine lake on gently rolling terrain—visiting here is a step back into old Florida. Lake Helen is located next to the spiritualist …read more

The Journey of Aging

The Journey of Aging

Thought of the Day:
“It is well for the world that in most of us, by the age of thirty, the character has been set like plaster, and will never soften again.”
William James
OR
“We neither get better or worse as we get older, but more like ourselves.”
Robert Anthony

Thinking Outside of the Box:
These two quotes are fascinating. They represent the two ways people look at aging. One view takes the position that we don’t, or can’t, grow and change. The other says that growth and change are not only inevitable, but desirable as we become more fully individual. …read more

The Moral High Ground

The Moral High Ground

Thought of the Day:
” ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.”
Thomas Paine
Thinking Outside of the Box:
It is never easy to take the moral high ground. It can come across as arrogant, holier-than-thou, and it can feel very, very alone. But contrary to popular belief, doing the right thing, even when it is not the popular thing, is easier.
I have a theory that if you don’t do the right thing, whenever you can, whenever the opportunity presents itself, complications develop …read more

Dreams From Twilight Slumber

Dreams From Twilight Slumber

Thought of the Day:
“For in dreams, we enter a world that’s entirely our own. Let them swim in the deepest ocean or glide over the highest cloud.”
Professor Albus Dumbledore
“Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban”
Thinking Outside of the Box:
The word “dream” is a strange word. It can be a noun or a verb, and it can have two entirely different meanings. One definition of the word refers to defining a goal and using time and energy to reach that goal. The other definition refers to that state of mind we enter during sleep.

Epiphany – More Important Than Christmas?

Epiphany – More Important Than Christmas?

Thought of the Day:
And there were in the same country shepherds watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock.
And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them; and they feared with a great fear.
And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people:
For, this day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.
And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped …read more

Can 63% of Americans Be Wrong?

Can 63% of Americans Be Wrong?

Thought of the Day:
“Over 60 percent of American households have a dog as a pet.”
American Pet Products Manufacturers Association
Thinking Outside of the Box:
I didn’t know that dogs outnumbered cats by so many! In 2004, which is the last year the NPPMA has statistics for, 63% of American households had a dog. Only 34% had cats. Birds, reptiles and small animals all were in the single digits.
I was really surprised about cats. I am not sure if cats are not understood well by people, if cats that insist on going outside are not considered part of the …read more
