Never Grasp, Only Cradle

Thought of the Day:
“The bird of paradise alights only upon the hand that does not grasp.”
John Berry, Flight of White Crows

Thinking Outside of the Box:
The American Constitution grants us the right to pursue happiness. We are entitled to, and almost obligated to, chase happiness until we find it. It is the basis of democracy. The precious gift of freedom. But is it? I mean, is it a gift, a privilege, a right? Perhaps it is none of these. Perhaps the right to pursue happiness means the right to accept happiness should we be lucky enough to find it on our journey through life. We can’t chase it because chasing something implies that we must catch it (or the chase was a failure). Do not grasp happiness; open your hand and gently cradle it, as if it were a butterfly, for that is all it is – fragile and the most precious blessing to be found.

A Last Thought:
“Happiness always looks small while you hold it in your hands, but let it go, and you learn at once how big and precious it is.”
Maxim Gorky
